Wife of man killed at Florida movie theater to speak at Curtis Reeves' hearing
(CNN) -- Florida theater shooting suspect Curtis Reeves
is expected to attend his bond hearing Wednesday. So is the wife of the
man he is accused of killing in a movie theater over a texting argument
last month.
The January 13 shooting
at a movie theater in Wesley Chapel killed Chad Oulson and left his
wife, Nicole Oulson, with a hand injury.
Reeves, 71, a former
Tampa police officer, is accused of shooting Chad Oulson after an
altercation because the latter was texting the couple's babysitter
during movie previews, police said.
The suspect was with his wife for the matinee at the theater in suburban Tampa.
During the argument, Reeves left the auditorium, apparently to complain to management, police said.
He returned irritated, the argument continued and popcorn was thrown, a witness said.
In the incident report,
the suspect told police he was hit with an unknown object in the face
and fearing he was under attack, pulled a handgun from his pocket and
shot Chad Oulson.
But the victim's wife said the two men exchanged words, but nothing that merited gunfire.
"It was a couple of
words. No threats. No harm. No nothing," she told ABC's "Good Morning
America" last month. "We're both very respectful when the movie is on,
that we put our phones away. He took a couple of seconds just to check
the phone to make sure there were no messages about our daughter."
A defense attorney has
said Reeves was the victim and Chad Oulson was the aggressor. But Nicole
Oulson's attorney, TJ Grimaldi, dismissed that idea.

Obama, what happened to economic growth?
(CNN) -- President Barack Obama announced
that 300 companies -- including Apple, Wal-Mart and others -- have
signed a pledge to help the long-term unemployed by making sure they
don't have barriers in their hiring practices.
This is good news, but it
won't solve the problem. The best we can hope for is that the companies
now will make special efforts to seek out and employ those who have
suffered long-term joblessness.
That's a nice start, but feel-good gestures won't cut it when there are almost 4 million Americans
who have been out of work for more than six months. That's a big
number. What's disconcerting is that the current long-term unemployment
is more serious than in previous economic downturns. Data from previous business cycles
show people suffering from long-run joblessness at worst accounted for
about 20% to 25% of the unemployed. In recent months, that percentage
has jumped to nearly 40% -- an all-time record!
Indeed, America is beginning to look like Europe. It used to be that
long-term unemployment in the U.S. was only a fraction of Europe's, but
the latest data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development show that the United States has caught up to many of
Europe's welfare states.
That's not a race we want to be part of, much less win.
So what's the solution?
There's no silver bullet,
but economic growth is the single most important key. All forms of
unemployment get worse when the economy is weak. But when the economy is
booming, the job market gets better for everybody -- including those
who have been unemployed for long periods.
Unfortunately, economic
growth hasn't proven easy. The recession may have ended officially in
the summer of 2009, but we're still suffering through a sluggish
economic cycle. Recent improvements in the overall employment rate are
in large part the result of people dropping out of the labor force, and
the problem of long-run unemployment has barely budged.
To boost employment, we need the kind of strong growth America enjoyed during the Reagan and Clinton years, when millions of new jobs were created and the unemployment rate fell dramatically.
To get there, we need a return to the types of free-market policies we
got under Reagan and Clinton: a lower burden of government spending and
less intervention from Washington.
Unfortunately, we've
been moving in the exact opposite direction. Under both Presidents Bush
and Clinton, the size and scope of government has expanded, and the
United States -- which had the world's third-most free-market economy
when Bill Clinton left office -- has now dropped to 17th in the Economic
Freedom of the World rankings.
We also need to make
sure the unemployed don't get lured into long-term dependency. One
glaring example of misguided big-government policy is the argument to
endlessly extend unemployment benefits. That sounds compassionate, but according to economists such policies discourage the unemployed from aggressively seeking new jobs.
There is also persuasive evidence that employers are reluctant to hire people
(regardless of any "pledges" they may sign) who have been out of work
for lengthy periods, which makes the President's preferred approach of
more unemployment benefits akin to an overprotective parent who hinders a
child's development.
Moreover, Obama's
proposed hike in the minimum wage would actually counteract any good his
pledge would do. Why? Increasing the minimum wage is the equivalent of sawing off the bottom rungs on the economic ladder.
Simply stated, businesses create jobs when they think a new employee
will help the bottom line. Artificially raising the cost of workers --
particularly those with marginal skills -- is a recipe for creating more
unemployment.
The president's effort
to get companies on board with hiring the long-term unemployed should be
applauded, but he shouldn't for one second think that it will solve the
problem. In fact, too many of his other proposals would serve only to
exacerbate the problem the long-term unemployed are facing. Instead,
Obama should take a page out of the Reagan and Clinton presidencies and
take action to get to the root of unemployment: economic growth.

Trends in Lighting for 2014
1 | Back in (Matte) Black
A touch of mystery, combined with a pinch of sophistication and a dash of demure sexiness, matte black is hot! It is showing up in every aspect of lighting: shades, arm extensions, bases... In some case it is on its own, but there is also a significant pairing with gold and bronze tones. I think my favorite look is a gold-lined black shade for a warm, glowing light.
2 | Golden Glow
Fear not, gold's re-emergence is not about to fade gracefully into the background to make way for matte black: it is more than capable of standing on its own. And simply put, it shines. Think contemporary glam with soft shapes - lots of circles, orbs, and organic references.
3 | Sconces in Kitchens
The trend of minimal upper cabinets in kitchens has introduced new opportunities for lighting. Rather than relying upon potlights, sconces are being installed. Ideally, the sconces include extension arms so that they can be optimally used for multiple tasks.
4 | Lights as Art
Lighting, to some extent, has always had a sculptural element, at least within rooms where the light is to be a showpiece. I think it has never been more universal than it is now, with lighting truly acting as jewellery. Yes, it can stand alone and be beautiful. But when added to an interior, it catapults the room to the nth degree, adding that final missing link.
5 | Exposed
Clustered or on their own, there are a lot of fixtures showing off their suspension cords and hanging loose. In many cases, the intention is to draw attention to the brightly coloured cord and simple accompanying shade. The look has a bit of whimsy and invites the staggering of shapes and heights when used in groupings.
6 | Bent Wood
The organic, sculptural theme continues through the use of wood, both slatted and bent into fluid forms that move the eye. Not only is the form artistic, but the way the light falls from the openings in the shade where the material separates casts great shadows.
7 | Caged In
The idea of cages is strong, with metal or wire leaving exposed bulbs. There is the simplistic, which most closely resembles chicken wire and a small cage. Taking it up a level are lights that are cast with heavier metals and may even be embellished with crystals or glass and shapes which are elegant rather than rudimentary.
8 | Industrial Chic
If you love the idea of pre-loved and re-purposing, this may be the way to go. Of course, there are fixtures that fall into this category that are simply made to look old - the metal might be corroded, rusted, scratched or dented. But there are also true vintage finds and pieces that may have started as a bucket or a gear that have been reclaimed, cleaned up, and out to use once more.
As in other areas of the home, creating that matched look has long since disappeared, so you can certainly play with multiple styles and designs within a given space for a layered and artful look. But if you had to choose just one, which would it be? Or is there another trend you have observed that you prefer above
